A 24-YEAR-OLD must pay out around £400 after stealing headphones and clothes from Salisbury shops.

Toby Charles Mitchell, of St Margarets Street in Bradford-on-Avon, also pleaded guilty to assaulting another man by beating and damaging a police van while in the city.

Heard by Swindon Magistrates' Court, on September 3 last year Mitchell stole clothes from TK Maxx, in addition to two pairs of wireless bluetooth headphones from Currys PC World.

The following day, September 4, Mitchell stole more clothes from TK Maxx, to the value of £256.82.

It was also on this day the defendant assaulted another man by beating and intentionally damaged a van belonging to Wiltshire Police, causing £120 worth of damages.

Mitchell indicated a plea of guilty to being found with a pair of hand pliers, to be used in connection with theft.

The 24-year-old was ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £95, costs of £85 and compensation of £219.99.

He was ordered by magistrates to complete 50 hours of unpaid work.
