Two students from Salisbury have been named Heroes of the Year at this year's South Wiltshire Hero Awards.

All winners were revealed in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday June 8.

Live-streamed on the Journal’s Facebook page, the event was a celebration of the amazing efforts of some of the region’s most remarkable individuals whose hard work and dedication was invaluable during the pandemic.

Keir Doherty, a student at Trafalgar School in Downton, and Aaron Joseph, a student at St Joseph’s in Laverstock volunteer hours of their time every week to help coach younger children at Salisbury Rovers FC.

Both boys are also part of the Beautiful Game project, helping coach disadvantaged children who might not normally be able to access football.

During the pandemic, when the club was forced to close, they kept in touch with younger children by sending them videos of them practising their football skills, so children could continue to learn and play.

They also helped raise £2,000 for local charities such as Salisbury Hospice, Encircles and the Women’s Refuge.

Hosted by Simon Weston CBE, who was joined by celebrity guests Craig Revel Horwood, Dr Hilary Jones and Kate Bliss, a total of 10 awards were given out, including the Hero of the Year, who was revealed at the end of the presentation by sponsors of the awards MIPermit.
