Salisbury District Hospital remains Covid-free despite the recent rise in cases, it has been confirmed.

Infections have started to increase again in the past week as a result of the spread of the Delta variant, previously known as Indian variant.

The virus mutation is now the dominant strain in the UK, including the South West, and is threatening the end of all lockdown restrictions scheduled to take place on June 21.

However, the increase in cases across Wiltshire is not translating into a rise in hospital admissions at the city's hospital.

As of 8.15am on Wednesday June 9, no positive patients were being cared for on site.

A spokesperson from Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust told the Journal "a few patients" that had tested positive for the virus were looked after in the past few weeks, but normally no more than one at any given time.

According to figures from Public Health England, 70 cases were recorded across the Wiltshire Council area in the week to June 4.

That's an increase of 27 on the week before.

Laverstock, Bodenham & Coombe Bissett and Downton & Morgan's Vale were the only two areas in south Wiltshire that recorded more than two cases in the same period.

They had five and four respectively.

The plateau in hospitalisations is believed to be a direct result of the vaccines, which are stopping people from becoming seriously ill.

Over 25s are now eligible to book their jab.

The majority of them will be delivered from City Hall.
