A CITY and Wiltshire Councillor has written to the Department of Transport calling for "emergency action" over St Mark's roundabout.

The traffic lights at A36 Weeping Cross roundabout, as it is officially known, have been switched off for more than a week.

Liberal Democrat Paul Sample JP, Salisbury and Wiltshire Councillor for St Edmunds, has written to Baroness Vere of Norbiton, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Transport, asking for the matter to have their "prompt attention".

Earlier this week, the Conservative Group wrote to Highways England to demand "urgent and comprehensive action" over the A36 through Salisbury.

Salisbury Journal:

In his correspondence, Cllr Sample said: "Can I draw your attention to the Traffic Light Outage at A36 Weeping Cross Roundabout.

"I understand that the electoral power supply to these traffic light has been accidentally damaged by a contractor.

"Can I ask you, as Minister, to instruct Highways England to take emergency action to turn these back on at the earliest opportunity?

"These traffic lights were installed to reduce injury and fatal accidents at this site.

"They have been out of action for about a week and there is no sign of them being repaired in the near future."

Cllr Sample added that "prompt attention" is requested "before someone is killed or seriously injured".
