A MAN locked himself in the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral while walking home from the pub, after the Euro 2020 semi-final Wednesday night.

The same night, just after midnight, six people were swimming in the River Avon near Bridge Street.

This was one of the main areas in the city centre that football fans were celebrating England's 2 - 1 win against Denmark.

In the lead up to the final against Italy, and following these two reports, police are urging residents to act responsibly and get home safe after the game Sunday night.

No arrests were made Wednesday night, July 7, but police were called to a series of incidents linked to anti-social behaviour.

When alerted to the six people in the river, police attended and gave those involved appropriate advice.

At the same time the force received a call from the wife of a man who had been watching the football at a pub, but on his walk home he got himself locked in the gardens of the cathedral.

Police assisted in removing him from the grounds.

Officers also closed Fisherton Street, leading into the Central Car Park, due to the number of people celebrating in the street. The road was reopened shortly afterwards.

Superintendent Phil Staynings is reminding the public that "violence and criminal damage of any kind will not be tolerated and being drunk is not an excuse".

He added that entering a river while drunk could lead to a "tragedy".

He said: “On the whole the celebrations have been good natured, and people have been adhering to the rules, which we are thankful for.

“We understand the excitement and the euphoria around England’s men’s team making the final of the Euros for the first time, however, we just ask that people take responsibility for their actions and don’t spoil it for others or those who are not interested in the football.

“Incidents such as these place an unnecessary burden on emergency service capacity.

“We’d strongly advise people not to celebrate by jumping into rivers or bodies of water, especially whilst intoxicated, as this could lead to tragedy.

“If you are drinking, please do so responsibly and plan your journey home in advance by booking a taxi or having a designated driver."
