Six restaurants in Salisbury have received low food hygiene ratings, some with urgent improvements necessary, in the past eight months.
The food hygiene rating scheme gives clear information about businesses’ hygiene standards at the time of inspection and cover the handling of food, how it is stored, how food is prepared, the cleanliness of facilities, and how food safety is managed.
Businesses with very low ratings must make urgent or major improvements to hygiene standards, and in severe cases a health officer might stop part of a business or close it down completely until it is safe for customers.
The worst hygiene rating is zero, ‘urgent improvement required’, and the best is five, ‘Hygiene standards are very good’.
Below are six establishments in Salisbury which were given low ratings, between 0 and 2, in assessments that took place in 2021.

Inspections take place every six months for high-risk businesses, and two years for lower risk businesses, most restaurants and cafes falling in between this category as they often serve fresh food which is higher risk than frozen goods.
Food inspectors don’t provide information on the quality of food, customer service, culinary skill, presentation, or comfort.
These ratings reflect a snapshot of the food hygiene standards at the time of inspection rather than how good the restaurant is.
In England, it is not compulsory for restaurants to display the rating they are given unlike in Wales and Northern Island where it is compulsory to display these.
The information in this article is correct as of September 6.
