A nursery in Salisbury District Hospital was rated good overall in its latest Ofsted inspection, an improvement from last year.  

Tops Salisbury’s Ofsted inspection on August 25th this year redeemed the nursery from its previous inspection in January 2020, when improvement was required.  

The inspectors Samantha Powis and Bridget Copson commented: “Children arrive at the nursery excited and ready to explore.  

“They separate with ease from parents as a familiar member of staff welcomes them. 

“Staff constantly praise and reward children for their good behaviour, helping children to feel proud and form good relationships.”

In terms of what the early years setting does well, staff were well supported, received good training, and a good range of activities were provided.  

The inspectors also praised how well staff and parents communicated, however they suggested that staff share information about children’s individual needs with new schools as early as possible, so this information is available before they start

Children at Tops Salisbury showed high levels of self-confidence as well as understanding the importance of good hygiene and keeping healthy, with inspectors praising the ‘tasty and nutritious hot meals’ provided. 

The nursery’s Safeguarding arrangements were also deemed effective with staff to children ratios well maintained, and new staff thoroughly vetted with annual reviews.  

Since Covid-19, inspections have also taken into account the pandemic in their evaluation with inspectors noting: “The nursery team have worked hard during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic to maintain good communication with parents and children.” 

Tops Salisbury opens Monday to Friday from 6am to 8pm all year round, it has 18 members of staff and currently 179 children registered.
