After learning from his own mistakes and experience over the years, a wildlife photographer from Salisbury has a few tips to give to aspiring photographers. 

Felix Rome got his first camera when he was around 13-years-old, sparking his enthusiasm for the trade. 

The 25-year-old from Winterslow now has an undergraduate degree in Marine and Natural History Photography from the University of Falmouth and is the resident photographer for Governor's, luxury camps in Kenya and Rwanda, as well as working as a 'grizzly bear and whale guide' in British Columbia.

This year he had the experience of a lifetime when he found himself stranded in Kenya, as it was put on the UK travel red-list, and ended up being one of the only tourists in the Masai Mara.

Salisbury Journal: "This hippo photo was taken in the Masai Mara from a Hot Air Balloon. I get to go on rides quite often which is amazing. It is a great way to get a different perspective of the Mara. You can see for miles and you look down on these large animals that you spend your days looking up at. Hippos are scattered all along the Mara river and you find them in pods. One flight I saw this pod huddled together close to the rivers edge. Felix's Top Tips

1) You do you: “Don’t try and copy other people, take a picture because you like it and keep working at that.”

2) Better to be safe than sorry: “Take [photos] and then delete them, don’t regret not taking them. But also don’t go crazy.” 

3)  Learn by doing: “A lot of people say they watched these Youtube videos before they went away, and they read books and how to use the camera, but really its actually knowing when to use it and why. You can only gain that by going out there and taking pictures”

4) Make mistakes: “I know its super cliché but, doing the wrong thing you learn way more you learn more about how it works... You learn more from failure in photography.”
