The Mayor of Oswestry Cllr Mark Jones will be among hundreds of competitors as the town's 10k run gets underway tomorrow (October 17).

After the success of the first Oswestry10k event in 2019, runners were left kicking their heels as last year's event was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

But after a frustrating two years for event organisers, Alan Lewis of Adrenaline Sporting Events says he can't wait to see the event get underway.

"We’re relieved to have survived because it’s been a tough time,” he said. “Not having any events in 16 months and not having any government help has been a challenge.

"We’re here though, and we can’t wait to get stuck in on the day.

"It will be great for the running community, but also for the cafés and the town in general.

"Like at the Balloon Festival a few weeks back, it’s good to have a fun atmosphere in the town and good to have something to look forward to."

The event gets underway at 9am with the race starting in Church Street opposite Cae Glas Park before the route takes runners out of town via Morda, before looping back along Trefonen Road and finishing in the same spot.

Organisers say road closures will be in place from 8.15am with diversions in place.

"Many roads will only be closed for a short period. If you live on the route and will need to leave by car during the road closure we advise that you move your car before the closure starts at 815am," said a spokesperson.

"If you are travelling into the town, please follow the diversion routes to avoid the closed roads.

"We suggest that spectators watch the start and start and finish on Church street. The route has good pavement coverage so feel free to cheer on from all areas."
