Salisbury Cathedral has lit its iconic spire green to show local support for acting to reduce climate change globally.

The cathedral turned its 123-metre-tall spire green yesterday in support of the joint appeal made by faith leaders at the Vatican conference earlier this month for governments to commit to ambitious targets at the upcoming U.N. climate conference

Prayers were led by Canon Robert Titley, Canon Treasurer of Salisbury Cathedral, with a small gathering of clergy and church members as the spire turned green last night to mark two weeks before COP26.

They gathered on the Cloister roof beneath the green Spire, stood amongst the cathedrals recently installed solar power system featuring 37kW of high-efficiency Sunpower 400W modules.

Canon Titley, dubbed ‘green canon’ by colleagues at the cathedral for his work in the Cathedral’s eco initiatives, said: “Salisbury Cathedral’s Spire can be seen for miles proving a visible symbol of our belief that action to reduce climate change needs to be taken, and the fact that we are holding in prayer both the summit and our own responsibilities to care for God’s earth. O

“ther cathedrals will doing similarly but this is a moment that belongs to all communities and all faiths, not just Salisbury and this Cathedral.”
