A 15th century townhouse near Salisbury Cathedral recently hit the market and it has a unique history.

Charming and beautifully presented, the Grade II listed timber framed house is situated near Cathedral Close on Ivy Street in a historic corner of Salisbury.

Named after Mayor John Ivie who is believed to have lived in the house, the grand property covers 2,796 sq ft and benefits from a secluded garden.

Mayor Ivie played a key role in protecting Salisbury from the 1627 plague, being one of the few wealthy townsfolk who remained in the city and helped relieve the famine and poverty that occurred during the plague years.

The property has come a long way since then.

A sense of grandeur is experienced immediately on entering the house as you walk into the hall which features large oak-panelled walls, flagstone floors and a stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove which leads into the drawing room.

The dual-aspect dining room feels warm and homely thanks to the oak floorboards and natural light, with French doors which lead out onto the garden, another door leading to a courtyard.

Down a few steps you’ll find the bespoke kitchen which has quartz surfaces and a stylish breakfast bar with its own glass-roofed oak veranda.

On this floor there is also a cosy snug.

Upstairs are all five bedrooms and two shower rooms that have been redesigned and fitted, benefiting from handmade travertine tiles and underfloor heating.

The master bedroom overlooks the private Mediterranean-style garden is a particularly special feature as it was newly created and designed by Royal Horticultural Society award winning designer Catherine Thomas.

To one side of the property is an original coaching entrance, with double gates through to a courtyard.

The former garage lies beyond this as well as a kitchen garden with espalier pear and apple trees.

Savills Salisbury Property Agent Paul Cadge, who is managing the sale, adds: “I love the panelling in the drawing room and attention to detail throughout the whole house.”
