AS THE half-term school holidays get underway, here are a few suggestions of things to do in and around Salisbury.

1. Stonehenge & Old Sarum

Award-winning author Cressida Cowell has partnered with English Heritage to create ‘a really wizard family day out’ at Stonehenge and Old Sarum this October half-term.

The author’s bestselling Wizards of Once series is the inspiration for a brand-new Halloween trail at both sites in the lead up to Halloween from October 23 to October 31.

Set in a fantastical, ancient Britain, the Wizards of Once books are full of wizards, warriors, witches, giants and sprites.

The Stonehenge event here which runs from 9.30am until 5pm, and tickets for the Old Sarum event here which runs from 10am until 5pm.

2. River Bourne Community Farm

Come along to River Bourne Community Farm to enjoy some spooky fun.

From Monday (October 25) to Sunday (October 31) there will be a pumpkin hunt from 10am to 1pm each day and a bouncy castle and mini striker in the big barn.

The farmyard and cafe are open 10am to 1pm daily. There is no need to book.

3. Salisbury Cathedral - Beyond the Library Door

The Cathedral's library is celebrating the completion of a National Heritage Lottery funded project which started in 2017.

A series of open afternoons and events are being held to share some of the information and items discovered during the project, as well as a few ‘behind the scenes’ details.

Beyond the Library Door - Discover Salisbury Cathedral Library runs from Monday (October 25) to Friday 29, when the library will be open and free to visit between 1pm and 4pm daily.

There will also be a children’s book trail around the Cathedral.

4. Salisbury Museum

Take part in the Halloween trail at the museum.

Or get creative at In Print Condition - Discovery Day family art workshop with Charlie James.

It takes place on Tuesday October 26 from 10am to 4pm.

No booking is required. Normal admission charges apply.

Take part in poly board printing inspired by the British Wood Engravers exhibition and the landscapes of Wiltshire wood engraver, Howard Phipps.

There is also a Halloween trail at the musuem.

5. Old George Mall

On Saturday October 30 take part in spook-tacular events at Old George Mall, running from 11am to 4pm.

6. Ghost walks

Join the Salisbury City Guides for some spooky walks this Halloween.

The classic ghost walk are on Monday October 25, Tuesday 26, Thursday 28 at 7pm. On Friday 29 there are two walks at 7pm and 7.30pm.

Family Frighteners Walks take place on Tuesday October 26 and Saturday 30, Starting at 6pm. The walk is for families/adults with children of primary school age.

All the walks start at Salisbury Information Centre on Fish Row.

7. Pumpkin Patch and maize

The Picking Patch in Fordingbridge is welcoming visitors for some Halloween fun.

There are pumpkins of all shapes and sizes as well as different colours with more than 20 varieties for visitors to choose from at Pumpkin Picking Patch.

There is also a Halloween maize maze.

8. Watch from Home: Oliver Twist!

Leeds Playhouse in co-production with Ramps On The Moon presents Oliver Twist, which is being made available to watch online by Wiltshire Creative over the half term from October 25 and November 20.

9. Pumpkin Picking

Fordingbridge Pumpkin Pastures is open everyday until Sunday October 31, 9.30am until 4pm.

On Saturday October 30 it is hosting a fireworks display. Gates open at 6pm with the display starting at 7pm.

10. SHIFT Social

Wiltshire Creative’s Young Ambassadors present The SHIFT Social at Salisbury Arts Centre on Saturday October 30, 7pm.

An evening of fun, food, cocktails, mocktails, a Halloween costume contest, entertainment, and a quiz.

It also features live music from young local acts including The Facilitators, Fizz and Becca Maule.

This event is open to everyone aged 14 and above, tickets are free to book.

There will be prizes for the best fancy dress outfit.

Fancy dress is strongly encouraged, and there will be prizes for the best dressed.

Doors open at 6.30pm, with entertainment starting at 7pm.
