A MAIN road has been closed to allow for urgent tree maintenance to be carried out.

The B3081 Verwood Road is now closed until Friday (October 29).

A post on Dorset Council's Facebook page said: "We are having to urgently close the B3081 Verwood Road from 9.30am this morning (25 October) until Friday 29 October, to carry out emergency tree works.

"We had hoped to address the necessary tree maintenance later in the season, but the high winds and heavy rain we had last Wednesday has meant we’ve had to bring the work forwards as the trees now pose a threat.

"We are sorry for the very short notice. Access to Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is unaffected."

The council has apologised for the closure and said it was “unavoidable” and "people’s safety must come first".

Councillor Simon Gibson, Dorset Council’s lead member for highways said: “We appreciate this road closure is going to cause inconvenience for residents and businesses around Verwood over the half term holiday, but the trees along this stretch of road need urgent attention and people’s safety must come first.

“Our intention is always to spread roadworks out to prevent gridlock, but due to the nature of the work that needs to take place urgently in this area, it is unavoidable.

"We apologise to residents and businesses of Verwood for inconvenience caused and for the short notice of the road closure.”
