Reality of Brexit

In response to Henry Smith's letter in today's Advertiser, I fear that I am one of those Remainers that Henry rather disapproves of.

Yes, I accept the vote etc, but like half of the UK and most people under 50 - who wished to stay in the EU (warts and all) I am not aware of any real material benefit to any sector of the economy, or to the lives of most people, following the end of the transition period on 31 December, 2020.

Two younger members of my (admittedly large) extended family are both able entrepreneurs and have built up small, but high tech manufacturing businesses, one employing two people, the other approximately six, each exporting to EU countries and one also to other markets worldwide, including USA.

Suffice it to say that their experiences of the realities of exporting post Brexit have placed significant extra burdens on their businesses, both sadly no longer able to fulfil export orders to EU countries.

Henry Smith's letter is full of impressive rhetoric but when it comes to keeping many smaller, but entrepreneur led businesses going and maintaining the long-term livelihoods of those working for them - offers very little reassurance.

What success the UK makes of Brexit now depends on the competence, statesmanship, and steadfast long term vision - and imagination - of our elected government.

Santa's elves give Childline a hand

We all need a touch of Christmas magic this year. That’s why Santa’s workshop is open, and Santa and his elves are busy writing, sealing and posting letters that will put smiles on the faces of children everywhere!

With a letter from Santa, you’ll bring magical tales from the North Pole right to your doorstep. There are eight fantastically festive designs, from traditional Christmas to a North Pole Safari – so there really is something for every child, or even the family pet!

Whichever letter you choose, each one is more personalised than ever this year.

You can add your child’s name, age, hobbies, what they want for Christmas and your very own P.S. message.

Plus, it will be addressed and posted directly to your child via sleigh mail – so they’ll feel like they’re at the very top of Santa’s good list!

After sending a massive 170,000 letters last year, we’re looking forward to reaching even more children this year.

And with a donation to the NSPCC, you’ll help Childline be here for children who need someone to listen. That’s the true spirit of Christmas.

So, what are you waiting for? Order your personalised letter from Santa by December 14th to make sure yours arrives before Christmas.
