A display of more than 2,000 poppies has been unveiled by soldiers at a Wiltshire stately home.

Nursing home residents at Amesbury Abbey, near Stonehenge,joined forces with Amesbury Abbey’s activity coordinator Nona Hoyle and receptionist Lorraine Brown for the project.

They created a cascading display of 2,275 poppies made from tissue paper, laminated pictures, napkins, and crepe paper.

It was unveiled by Royal Artillery soldiers and Trace Needham, who works in the home’s maintenance team and used to serve in the army.

The display will be part of a special Remembrance Day commemoration at the Abbey today, Thursday, November 11.

There will be a performance by professional Hampshire singer songwriter Madison Douch, followed by a parade by the Cadet Force from St Michael’s School in Burghclere.

Managing Director, Naomi Cornelius-Reid, said: “Our residents worked morning, noon and night to create this beautiful display, which was unveiled by soldiers from the Royal Artillery – several related to our staff – and Trace Needham, a member of our maintenance team and formerly of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

“This really is a remarkable feat, and we are so proud of everyone involved. We are framing the photograph featuring the life-size models of Queen Elizabeth and the Unknown Soldier to send to Buckingham Palace.

“The parade by the St Michael’s Cadet Force has been organised by Niko Vidovich, who was recently at the Abbey for post-op respite and enjoyed his stay so much he has kept in touch ever since.”
