Today, one Salisbury resident turned 108.

Iris Miller (née Mott), resident of India Avenue, marks the milestone birthday today (Wednesday, November 17).

Born in 1913 in London, Iris has lived in Salisbury for the last decade.

Ms Miller resides with her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Rob Finch.

A tailoress by trade, she spent the years of the Second World War serving in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) as a telephonist, and other roles, in Birmingham.

Having been in the armed forces, she took advantage of free passage to Australia after the war and moved there, where she met her husband, merchant seaman Bertie.

They married in Australia, when she was in her 30s and he was in his 20s, and Joan was later born.

The family moved back to England to Kent, moving to the Isle of Sheppey, followed by Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

Speaking of her mother, Joan said: "She likes craft things - crotchet, knitting and making cards, and she reads a lot and loves wordsearch.

"When we moved to the Isle of Sheppey, it was difficult for her because she didn't know many people, but she always did the best she could for me."

When asked of her mum's secret to a long and healthy life, Joan admitted it was a mystery: "I really don't know. She's not a heavy drinker, doesn't smoke.

"She's quite laid back, and she's always said, 'If it's going to happen, it's going to happen', and doesn't fret about things."

Iris also admitted to being in the dark too: "I've got no idea."

She said reaching 100 was a highlight of her life, and added: "Salisbury is a lovely city. I don't go out now but I have been. I've seen what I need to see, and it does make a difference to see places.

"My daughter is doing a very good job looking after me - I'm still here!"
