THE group behind the protests at Amazon warehouses across the UK have responded after arrests were made outside a site in Darlington.

Extinction Rebellion (XR) has been staging protests outside a dozen 'Fulfilment Centres' around the country, blocking access to HGVs since the early hours of Friday.

This afternoon, police confirmed that it had arrested four people on suspicion of aggravated trespass in relation to the protests at Amazon in Darlington.

Confirming the arrests, a Durham Police spokesperson said that while officers remained on the scene, they were continuing to work to bring the protest to a "safe end."

But this evening, Extinction Rebellion responded to the arrests in Darlington as they said the young campaigners had "fought" for their future.

Andi Nader of XR Durham told The Northern Echo: "These young people who have been arrested are willing to sacrifice their liberties in order to make a point about climate change and how Amazon contributes to that.

"They feel so strongly that they are standing in the freezing cold, a lot have travelled from elsewhere in the country - they're not just local people."

It is understood a handful of campaigners remain at Amazon Darlington tonight, although it is not yet known whether a further day of action will go ahead tomorrow.
