OVERNIGHT road closures will be in place on the A31 flyover at Ringwood starting this evening (Monday December 13).

The A31 westbound carriageway that goes over the Ringwood roundabout will be closed overnight from 8pm to 6am until Friday (December 17) to install new drainage.

Vehicles on the westbound A31 will be taken off the road at the Ringwood exit to cross the roundabout, and re-join the A31 carriageway using the entry slip road.

From Wednesday, December 15 to Friday 17, 8pm to 6am, the A31 flyover eastbound between the Ringwood exit and entry will be closed overnight.

Traffic will be diverted off the A31 at Ringwood, down the exit slip road to the roundabout and back on to the A31 using the entry slip road from the roundabout. This is for surfacing work on the crossover points ready for the contraflow being installed in the new year.

Future closures and contraflow

Road closures and a contraflow system are set to be put in place in the new year as part of the A31 improvement works in Ringwood.

On January 4, 2022, the Ringwood westbound entry and exit slips will be closed and the carriageway will be reduced to one lane from 8pm to 6am.

From January 5, 2022 until November 30, 2022, the A31 Ringwood westbound entry slip road will be fully closed.

National Highways says the distance between the entry slip road and the first bridge being removed “does not provide enough space to safely get traffic into the contraflow, meaning we will need to keep the slip road closed through construction”.

Diversions will be in place. To join the A31 westbound at Ringwood, follow the diversion via the A31 eastbound to Poulner Hill where you can join the A31 westbound.

National Highways, in a newsletter, said it was preparing to install the contraflow in late January, which will allow two lanes of traffic in each direction along the A31 eastbound carriageway.

This will also allow for the closure of the westbound carriageway for the main construction.

It said: “Please follow diversion signs, adhere to any temporary speed limits and allow additional time for your journeys. We’re sorry for any inconvenience or delays while these works take place, but the scheme will improve future journeys.”

To leave the A31 westbound at Ringwood, follow the diversion via the A31to Ashley Heath where you can join the A31 eastbound and return to the Ringwood junction.
