A GROUP has been set up on social media in support of a pub which closed its doors last month.

The New Inn in Amesbury had its licence revoked by Wiltshire Council following complaints of noise, antisocial behaviour and alleged drug use.

Just days after the licence review meeting and outcome, 'Help The New Inn Amesbury' was launched on Facebook.

The creator behind the group, who has asked to be identified as Purcy, said he needed to do something to show the community's backing behind the High Street pub.

With news of the closure leaving Purcy "heartbroken", he decided to launch 'Help The New Inn Amesbury' to highlight its importance to the town.

He also wants the group to celebrate the pub's reopening and support a new landlord taking on the venture, with further details now revealed.

"The New Inn has been an integral part of me and my family integrating and settling into the area, making us feel welcome and part of the wider community," he said.

"The motivation behind creating the Facebook group is about supporting and helping The New Inn.

"For me it's trying to challenge the negative stigma of The New Inn that many disagree with and supporting whoever takes The New Inn forward as best as the community can."

To date, the group has around 200 members.

Despite the group's popularity, some residents living in the area welcomed the licence revoke.

Resident John Madeley, who lives near the site, even urged there should be an 11.30pm halt to nightlife across the town.

Talking about previous allegations and concerns towards The New Inn however, Purcy said: "These problems are bigger than just one single Amesbury pub. Especially one that I've only ever seen with proactive staff and door staff, reacting in a manner you would expect from any security professionals."

He added: "The New Inn is in my heart, my local.

"The New Inn is what I have seen in my eyes as of one of the last proper independent pubs within the area that offers the classic local pub atmosphere and community.

"It offers, what I've always felt, a place for anyone and everyone from any background in the community to come together."
