A 100-YEAR-OLD rambler has been gifted a special plaque to celebrate his birthday and more than 30 years of Wiltshire walking.

South Wilts Ramblers marked the centenarian milestone for member Ted Angel this week, by unveiling the plaque on a kissing gate below Old Sarum.

Ted has been a south wilts rambler for more than 35 years, helping out by leading walks, clearing footpaths and installing gates and footbridges.

Except for his time on active service in India during the Second World War, Ted has lived in Salisbury all of his life, and the new plaque's location is part of one of his favourite footpaths in the area.

Around 60 of his fellow walkers and friends were at the unveiling on Wednesday, February 9, to raise a glass of Bucks Fizz to his health.

Ted’s daughter Jennifer said her father was "extremely touched to have a gate in his name", installed by the group.

She said he had always valued the friendship and support given to him by South Wilts Ramblers, especially at the time of his wife’s death.

Anne Maryon-Davies, chairperson of the South Wilts Ramblers, said: "Ted’s knowledge of footpaths across south Wiltshire is remarkable, not just from so many years of walking them but from working with the ramblers to keep them accessible for the public to enjoy.

"Although he can no longer walk with us Ted has continued to support us and he is regarded with great admiration and affection by the group."

The gate where the plaque was installed can be found just off the main road from Salisbury through Stratford sub Castle, on the east/Old Sarum side, opposite the turning to St Lawrence Close.

It reads: "This plaque marks the 100th Birthday of Edward ‘Ted’ Angel, a great walker and volunteer with South Wilts Ramblers for over 35 years."
