THE VICTIM of a “serious assault” in Salisbury city centre has died.

Freddie Jones-Fontete was named as the victim of the New Canal attack at a hearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon.

The 23-year-old suffered a “serious head injury” in the attack, in the early hours of Sunday morning, and was taken to hospital, where he has since passed away.

The court heard that the attack involved “a single punch”.

Meanwhile, a man from Winterbourne Gunner has appeared in court accused of causing him grievous bodily harm.

Connor Pool, of Salt Lane, is charged with causing Mr Jones-Fontete grievous bodily harm with intent.

In the short hearing, Pool did not make an application for bail and was remanded in custody.

Prosecutor Pauline Lambert said it was a “tragic case”.

Representing the 24-year-old, who appeared in the dock wearing a grey hoodie, Paul Whitcliffe said that the defendant handed himself into the police and confirmed that his client would not make a bail application.

He must appear before Winchester Crown Court on March 25, where he is expected to enter a plea.

Police officers and paramedics rushed to New Canal at around 3am on Sunday, with the victim’s head injuries described at the time as “life-threatening”.

Wiltshire Police previously said: “It is understood an altercation took place involving a group of around 15 men, with the victim suffering a serious head injury and was taken to hospital.”

Pool was charged on Tuesday evening and the force confirmed they are “not now looking for any suspects”.
