The funeral has been arranged for the young man who died after being assaulted in the city centre.

Salisbury Cathedral will be the venue for the funeral of Freddie Jones-Fontete, who passed away in hospital last month.

He was the victim of an attack on New Canal at around 3am on Sunday, February 20.

Following his death, tributes poured in for the 23-year-old, who was described as someone who "brightened everyone’s day with his huge smile and charisma".

More than £40,000 was raised for his funeral arrangements, after friend Jamie Dawkins set up a GoFundMe page to give Freddie "the celebration worthy of the young king he was".

The funeral will take place on Friday next week (March 25), at 3pm at Salisbury Cathedral, with a reception later in The Guildhall.

The young man suffered a serious head injury in the attack, described at the time as "life-threatening", and was taken to hospital, where he later passed away.

Freddie was a marketing executive for Berry Telecom Group in Salisbury, a regular at The Village Freehouse, and played for Laverstock and Ford football club.

After the attack in New Canal, which police believed involved around 15 men, three arrests were made.

A 24-year-old man was charged, and police say they are not looking for any other suspects.

Connor Pool, of Salt Lane, Winterbourne Gunner, appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on February 23, charged with causing Mr Jones-Fontete grievous bodily harm with intent.

The court heard that the attack involved "a single punch".

He is due to appear before Winchester Crown Court on March 25, where he is expected to enter a plea.
