THE Rose and Thistle in Rockbourne has been crowned historic pub of the year.

The thatched pub dates back to the 16th century and was awarded the accolade in the South England Prestige Awards 2021/22.

Landlord Chris Chester-Sterne said it was "fantastic" to be awarded the title of historic pub of the year for the county which was not just in recognition of the building but also the food at the establishment.

"We're really proud of the building it such an historic place."

He says customers have their own personal stories and histories tied to the pub and added: "It is really nice the place has touched so many people."

"We're really, really pleased [about the award]," said Chris.

Built around 1580, it was originally three cottages and became a bakers which later started to sell liquor.

The pub's website says the first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890’s whose photo can still be found on the gentleman’s toilet door.

In the 1970’s the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub. In late 2014, Chris took over the Rose and Thistle.
