With the cost of living rising sharply, many Salisbury residents have turned to a new social supermarket for their food supplies.

Located in Catherine Street, Your Salisbury Pantry is part of a franchise which evolved from a food support project that was launched during the pandemic in 2020.

It is part of a scheme that works across the city to eradicate food poverty. Food which would otherwise go to waste is redistributed instead.

Sarah Gregson is a Communities Manager for Salisbury City Council, and she oversees the team.

“Your Salisbury Pantry began in response to the pandemic, but there are so many reasons why people need support – from rising prices, fluctuating work situations or if they are in debt. We welcome anyone who needs us,” she said.

“There is a conversation with people when they first come and sign up as to the support they may need. We build a relationship with people, whether that is just listening or having conversations where people can get advice.”

Salisbury Journal:

Your Salisbury Pantry is different from a food bank which is more about managing a moment of crisis. With the supermarket, membership and support is ongoing.

It costs £5 which is payable when the service is used. There is a system of diamonds and hearts for food choice, and fruit and vegetables are in addition.

Customer Khadijah Bukko said: “I joined when it first opened. It has been lifesaving for me and my girls. Without it, things would be so much more difficult.”

The supermarket is popular and there is no stigma associated with this facility, says Sarah.

Those who use it are simply grateful for the help.

The supermarket is often seen as a starting point for support as no one knows when their situation might change.

Barbara King, who also shops there, said: “I am on Universal Credit, but the extra money was taken away, so this has been a lifeline. There is a lot of fresh food and tins, and it helps during the week.”

The shelves are stocked with fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, and tinned foods. There are even products for the fridge and freezer. People can choose how they use Your Salisbury Pantry either weekly or monthly to top up food supplies.

Your Salisbury Pantry is located at 59 Catherine Street and is open every Tuesday 10am to 3pm. It works in parallel with the café that has opened in the Baptist Church in Brown Street which provides a comfortable space for coffee and cake.
