A Salisbury school brought the community together to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Sarum St Paul's CofE (VA) Primary School opened its doors in 1972 and to mark the milestone held a special service, a commemorative tree planting and will also be burying a time capsule.

In addition to the usual curriculum, the pupils have been learning more about Salisbury, the history and how the city has evolved since the school first opened.

The service took place at St Paul’s Church in April, which was attended parents, governors, and local authority advisors. The Bishop of Salisbury gave a virtual blessing.

Head teacher Lizzie Weavers said: “There was a real sense of belonging and it could not have happened at a better time. The service was special and emotional, and the celebrations brought the community together.

“The heart of our school is the community, and we have all come together to deliver the love of learning.”

Each pupil has written a poem which will be published in a commemorative book.

They also took part in a collaborative art project overseen by Helen Southwell of the Glass Room.

The pupils made glass fish which are now on display at the school.

The school was also joined by MP John Glen to plant a commemorative tree.

A time capsule will be buried to capture this special moment in time for the school and show life in Salisbury today and may include a copy of the Salisbury Journal.

It is likely to be opened in 50 years’ time so that pupils at primary school can reflect on life in 2022.
