A new mayor for Salisbury has been elected in a ceremony today (Saturday, May 14).

Councillor Mr Tom Corbin is the 761st The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Salisbury.

Today's event saw the city's former mayor, Cllr Caroline Corbin, hand over the mayoral chain to her husband Cllr Tom Corbin, who was the deputy mayor.

They have both served as Bemerton Heath ward and formerly Bemerton ward city councillors since 2013.

The ceremony started in the Guildhall, following a procession via Fish Row, Butchers Row, Minster Street and to St Thomas’ Church, with a fanfare played by the Shrewton Silver Band.

The official mayor making service and full council meeting of Salisbury City Council then took place in St Thomas’ Church.

The party then made its way back to the Guildhall for a private reception.

It was attended by more than 200 civic dignitaries, including mayors from neighbouring towns and cities.

Cllr Tom Corbin said that it was a "first in Salisbury's mayoral history" that he has served the mayor both as deputy mayor and as consort, which he described a "privilege and honour".

He said: "Now, as we hope we have seen the back of Covid, I look forward as the mayor of Salisbury with Caroline as my mayoress to doing all we can to help promote Salisbury in a positive way as we look to the future and hopefully encourage tourism back into the city as Covid restrictions continue to decline and travel to and from foreign countries becomes more normalised.”

The mayor's charity for 2022-2023 will be Children’s Chance, a charity in the city that supports children and young people whose families are going through hard times.

The mayor wants to raise the charity's profile, and requests local residents and businesses to also consider how they can also help.

Donations to Children’s Chance can be made by directly via: Sort Code 40-52-40 account number 00012853 CAF Bank Ltd.

The Mayor will be supported during his mayoral year by the mayoress Cllr Caroline Corbin.

The mayoral scout will be Elliot from 3rd Salisbury Scouts and mayoral guide will be Lydia from 1st Winterbournes Guides, with reserve mayoral guide Jess and reserve mayoral scout Arthur.

The Deputy Mayor for the next year is Cllr Atiqul Hoque.
