The Ten Tors Challenge held annually on Dartmoor in Devon is renowned for its gruelling routes, unpredictable weather and the odd blister or two.

For one Salisbury family the event has become an annual ‘must do’ and after a two-year physical break, they were more than eager to take part in what was the 60th event and a real milestone of success for this military run youth event.

Godolphin School’s staff instructor Adam Reavill was taking part in his eighth outing and this year’s event was a record entry for the school.

Seasoned team manager Adam said: “We have entered five Combined Cadet Forces teams comprising of 29 girls all doing the 35-mile route. It is the first time we have had five teams enter at any distance, it is their first time in the event and on Dartmoor. They are all in year 10 and it is very special.”

Adam’s role with Godolphin School was not his only involvement in the prestigious event because his son Finn, aged 16, was also participating in the 45-mile entry from Bishop Wordsworth’s School.

Finn said: “This is my second time doing Ten Tors. In 2019 I did the 35-mile route and now I’m doing a step up to the 45-mile route and I’m team leader. I’m managing the team, managing timings, when we take a break and stuff like that. I also need to boost morale, that’s when I get the sweets out”.

Father and son might have been enough for one family, but not the Reavills as both of Adam’s daughters Kiera and Niamh, who also attended Godolphin School, have taken part three times each in past events.

“My two girls have passed the age of eligibility for the event now but Finn is on his second iteration. It’s in the blood you might say”.

Ten Tors is a challenge and not a competition but what of the rivalry between the two schools? Adam said: “There is definitely a bit of competition there but to be honest I think the competition that Finn has will be with his sisters rather that anyone else”.

Finn agrees: “There is a lot to live up to considering my family’s involvement”.

Niamh 21 is now studying at Manchester Metropolitan University and Kiera 23 is training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

One thing is for certain, the Reavill family has it all and for them Ten Tors is a real family affair.
