As the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend approaches, we've compiled 4 tips with the help of PDSA to keep your pets safe during this time.

National vet charity, PDSA, is encouraging pet owners to enjoy the celebrations while keeping their furry friends out of harm’s way.

Nina Downing, PDSA Vet Nurse, said: “While we wouldn’t want them to miss out on all the fun, it’s important we understand how to keep them safe during the celebrations."

1. Street party safety

Street parties are great fun but large crowds can become overwhelming for pets - be wary of loud noises such as music or fireworks and look out for signs of distress.

As people come and go out of your house and garden regularly, keep a close eye on your pet - you don't want them making a run for it!

You can make a secure inside den for your dog and cats feel safest when they're high up and out of the way.

2. Be careful of the heat

British weather can be unpredictable but if we're lucky enough to have some sunshine during the long weekend it's important to protect pets from heatstroke.

Always make sure pets have somewhere in the shade to rest and pack plenty of water to keep them hydrated.

Nina said: "Flat-faced dogs struggle to regulate their body temperature, so avoid taking them out in the heat of the day."

Also be sure to check the pavement isn't too hot before heading out or a street party.

3. Decorative dangers

If your pet gets hold of any decoration there's a chance they could swallow them, potentially causing life-threatening blockages.

To avoid emergency, hang decorations out of reach and pack them away securely once you take them down.

Nina warns: "Avoid the temptation to dress up your pets to celebrate – it can cause anxiety, overheating and they really do look their best just wearing what nature intended!"

4. Unlucky leftovers

Whether you’re planning a street party bake-off or a sizzling bank holiday BBQ, it can be tempting to treat our pets.

Unfortunately, human food doesn’t always sit well with our furry friends, and sugary, fatty, or greasy scraps can cause severe sickness and diarrhoea which may require emergency treatment.

Keep leftovers for yourself to enjoy and treat your pet with a healthy option instead.
