A NEW royal-inspired exhibition wants to cross the generation gap bringing memories of The Queen’s Coronation to the children of today.

Silver Salisbury has been awarded a community funding grant of almost £10,000 and is requesting memorabilia of the Queen’s Coronation during the 1950’s for this event.

Working in partnership with Salisbury Library, Celebrating Age Wiltshire and Salisbury Museum, Silver Salisbury will also be working with two of Salisbury’s primary schools – Woodlands Primary School and St. Martin’s CofE Primary School to connect the generations across the years.

Irene Kohler, Salisbury Older People’s Champion, said: “As a child in primary school in 1952, I remember a competition to make the most realistic replica crown, but mine didn’t win. We were all given a commemorative book about the Queen which I still have.

“I also remember mixing cakes with a wooden spoon and doing the washing in the kitchen sink – no electric mixers or washing machines then.”

Bringing the past into the present and making comparisons is important to this celebration and the library plans to create an exhibition of photos taken at the time of the coronation.

School children will come along to meet those who were alive at the time.

Philip Tomes, community library manager, said: “We want to spark ideas and debate between the generations and are quite excited to have the opportunity to inspire children and also, learn from them”.

These special conversations will be recorded, and songs will be made from the words. They will be set to music and will create an afternoon concert.

Over the Jubilee weekend, activities will also take place at 56a The Close and will include a memory booth and crown making sessions.

The funding was made available by the National Lottery Awards for All to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
