Today marks the hottest day of the year and Public Health England has issued a heat-health alert.

Temperatures for Salisbury's mini-heatwave are expected to reach 29 degrees from 2pm this afternoon (Friday 17 June).

The UK Health Security Agency South West (UKHSA) has issued its first level 2 heat-health alert this year, which is in place until Saturday 18 June.

Dominic Mellon, deputy director at UKHSA, said: "Much of the advice on beating the heat is common sense and we want everyone to enjoy the hot weather safely.

"Make sure to look out for signs of heat exhaustion such as feeling dizzy or weak with an intense thirst and a headache, and move to a cool place as soon as possible."

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued an amber wildfire alert for the coming weekend.

Damien Bence, area manager, said: “With a period of hot weather underway, we would urge people to take real care when enjoying the sunshine in our beautiful countryside.

"All too often, we see property destroyed when an initially small fire suddenly gets out of control."

How to stay safe in the heat

  • Stay cool indoors by closing curtains on rooms that face the sun – and remember that it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
  • Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol
  • Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals
  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest
  • Walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat if out in the sun
  • Avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
  • Make sure you take water with you if you are travelling
