A SECONDARY school has announced it will be closed tomorrow, July 18, "due to extreme heat warnings".

St Joseph's Catholic School, Laverstock, has responded to the ongoing heatwave, fearing it "does not have adequate facilities to accommodate pupils comfortably and safely".

As a result, the school on Church Road will not be opening tomorrow.

Students will be set work remotely, and enrichment activities are to go ahead at a later date.

The school will decide tomorrow whether to welcome students back on Tuesday, or remain closed, with the city set to reach highs of 31 degrees.

The announcement to parents and students, in full, reads: "Due to extreme heat warnings, the governors, headteacher, and senior staff have made the decision to close the school on Monday, July 18.

"This decision has not been taken lightly. We do not feel that we have adequate facilities to accommodate pupils comfortably and safely. Work will be set via Show My Homework.

"A decision about Tuesday will be taken during the day on Monday and we will update via the school website and school comms.

"Please rest assured that the closing of school on Monday is not a cancellation of booked enrichment activities - we will be looking to host the activities at the earliest opportunity in September so that pupils do not miss out."

The Met Office has issued an 'extreme heat' amber weather warning for Salisbury until the end of Tuesday. Other areas have escalated into the rare red alert, warning a danger to life.
