MP Danny Kruger has called for a formal closure order on a Devizes car park after recent 'horrendous events'.

Three people were arrested last week on suspicion of attempted murder after a pedestrian was left with life-threatening injuries following a crash in the Station Road area of the town.

The victim, a man in his 30s, remains in Southmead Hospital in a critical condition.

Wiltshire Police also said at the start of July that it had to attend 28 incidents involving ‘anti-social motorists’ at the car park in June.

Drivers have reportedly been speeding along Station Road and performing tricks in the car park

Some of the problems highlighted have included noise problems, risk to residents through dangerous driving, concerns about drug use, verbal abuse of residents, vandalism and more.

The car park has now been closed, with barriers remaining in place from 6pm until 6am until there is a formal closure order for the site, according to the Conservative MP for Devizes, Danny Kruger.

This is set to stop cars going into the area, as well as people who do not have a right to be there.

Mr Kruger met with residents living on and around Station Road in Devizes to discuss the issue.

He is "pleased" that the long-stay car park has now been closed, and said that the victim of last week's incident have his "deepest sympathies and I wish him a full and fast recovery".

Mr Kruger added: “The issues in the Station Road area stem mainly from groups using the long-stay car park to congregate.

“It’s not appropriate to comment further on the specifics that led to the incident as an active police investigation is underway, but I will say this: It is simply not acceptable that this has happened, and something must be done now about the antisocial behaviour problem in Station Road.

“I’m very sympathetic to residents’ anger and for their calls for more permanent solutions, including barriers at the car park entrances and traffic calming measures along station road.

“I will hold a public meeting in August which I hope will be attended by Wiltshire Council officers and representatives of the police, to hear what options have been explored and to set a firm plan.”
