ROYAL MAIL workers lined the street outside the Salisbury Delivery Office in Fisherton Street today with the first of their planned strikes.

It forms part of a national one-day strike involving 115,000 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and includes Royal Mail, Parcelforce, and Fleet.

A 2 per cent pay award was proposed by the Royal Mail Group but this has been refused.

CWU Rep Darren James said: “We have two ballots. This is the dispute over pay. It was called before the result of the second ballot and in my view, the second one is more important. They are really attacking our terms and conditions.

“They want compulsory Sunday working for a standard rate and to not give us sick pay.”

Darren has worked for Royal Mail for thirty-nine years and said that it was a relief when strike action was finally called.

In addition to the strike today, (August 26) CWU members working at Royal Mail will take strike action again on Wednesday August 31, Thursday September 8 and Friday September 9.
