A new map of proposed constituencies in England has been published.

It provides the final chance for the public to have their say on the new constituency areas, created by Boundary Commission for England (BCE).

This follows a government pledge to equal the size of parliamentary constituencies across the whole of the UK.

The BCE was told to make areas containing between 69,000 and 77,000 electors.

This means redrawing and renaming some seats – and in Wiltshire there are some big shakeups of county constituencies.

In the South West, there are a number of changes being proposed with most constituencies remaining the same, but giving up, or gaining some areas to others.

But the knock-on effects of the small changes elsewhere is the creation of a whole new constituency in Wiltshire.

Instead of the current five constituencies, North Wiltshire, Chippenham, Devizes, Salisbury and South West Wiltshire;  there could be six if the Commission’s recommendations are accepted: Chippenham; Melksham & Devizes, Trowbridge & Warminster, Salisbury, East Wiltshire; and Cirencester & North Wiltshire.

This last constituency would lose some of its southern districts, but have added areas in southern Gloucestershire around Cirencester.

This is the third and final public consultation and will last four weeks, ending on Monday, December 5.

The Commission will also publish all comments received during the secondary consultation stage, including transcripts from the public hearings held around the country.

Following this upcoming final consultation, the BCE will form its final recommendations which will be submitted to Parliament by July 2023.

Wiltshire MPs have previously reacted to plans for redrawing the boundaries with surprise.

Last year Mr Kruger said: “I’m surprised to see how radical these proposals are and my initial reaction is dismay that Devizes could be cut off from Marlborough, Pewsey and Tidworth.”

North Wiltshire MP, James Gray said: “I would obviously be very sorry to lose a much-loved part of my constituency – namely Royal Wootton Bassett, Calne and villages.”

Chippenham MP, Michelle Donelan said: “I would of course be extremely sad to lose any part of the current Chippenham constituency and passionately love our pocket of Wiltshire."

In 2019 there was such a big backlash about how South Wiltshire should be carved up that government officers were forced back to the drawing board.

This year there have also been objections from councils about how boundaries will be redrawn in areas like Malmsbury and Calne.
