A lorry stuck under Kingsway Bridge on Warminster Road has resulted in the closure of the A36 near Wilton.

UPDATE: The road has now reopened.

The incident happened at roughly 8.54am this morning (October 28) at the Wilton bridge, which is frequently hit by large vehicles.

Traffic queued up and attempted to pass under the bridge on both sides of the lorry, according to one witness.

Wiltshire Police is in attendance. A spokesperson said: "Officers are responding to an HGV being stuck under a bridge on the A36 near the junction with Kingsway.

“The road is currently closed while the lorry is removed and the bridge checked for damage.

“Drivers are urged to avoid the area.”

Trains traveling across the bridge between Salisbury and Tisbury were slowed at around 9.20am this morning.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "On closer examination the bridge was safe and trains were accelerated to full speed shortly afterwards.

"This should serve as a reminder to drivers to check the height of their vehicles on the cab plate and make sure their planned routes don’t take them under low bridges.

"Network Rail does purse companies for costs associated with bridge strikes so it’s worth taking that extra time and making sure your route is safe."

The bridge has previously been named in the top 10 'most struck bridges' by Network Rail.
