THE Solstice Lantern was taken to Stonehenge today.

It captured the last embers of light before the days start to get longer. It will be taken to Amesbury once it leaves Stonehenge.

It was the 12th annual Winter Lantern Procession, arranged by Amesbury Museum and the Stonehenge Chamber of Trade.

This year's 'Solstice Fairy' - seen holding the lantern in front of the stones - was Callie Brent.

The lantern was lit at sunset on December 21, and extinguished at sunrise on December 22.

The procession started at 5.15pm from Amesbury Central car park and taken to Amesbury Abbey for refreshments.

Winter Solstice

This is a twice-yearly pilgrimage for many visitors, including Druids and Pagans, who also go to the heritage site to see the summer solstice in June.

These events draw in large crowds to celebrate the passing of the seasons, and give the opportunity for people to visit Stonehenge with effectively no barriers.

Here's all you need to know for the 2022 winter solstice event.
