Plans have been submitted to install new 72-inch digital displays on popular footpaths across the city.

British Telecom (BT) has requested permission from Wiltshire Council to bring 'Street Hubs' to Salisbury.

The double-sided units would bring free WiFi, free calls, and a place for people to charge their mobile phones.

The proposed locations for the hubs include the footpaths outside 41 Blue Boar Row, Sarum Jewellers in New Canal, Poundland in High Street, and 35 Old George Mall.

BT's planning and advertising applications are currently under consultation and anyone is able to comment on the proposals.

The hubs are funded through digital advertisement revenue and aim to replace phone boxes across the UK.

Commercial, local community, and council content would be displayed at 10-second intervals.

Each hub also includes an interactive tablet that can be used to access local council services, maps, and local weather information.

BT claims Street Hubs combat anti-social behaviour by blocking suspicious call patterns and numbers if a unit is being misused to buy illegal drugs.

BT head of street James Brown said: "The free digital services provided by our Street Hub units can play an important role in helping revive the UK's high streets following the pandemic."

The consultation deadline for the plans is February 2, 2023.
