A man with cancer who had been trapped in his Wilton council flat is now able to get out after a temporary bridge was erected.

Alan Pilgrim Senior, 69, and his son Alan Junior, 43, were happy to be able to leave their home after being stuck inside for one week due to floodwater.

Salisbury-based company Jade Scaffolding was contracted by Wiltshire Council to install the bridge.

Both bridges connecting the Churchill Court flats to the pavement were completed on Monday, January 23.

This meant that Alan Sr was able to see his grandson and friends in Wilton which he told the Journal last week was 'all he wanted to do'.

Alan Sr said: "I went out in town on Saturday and had a coffee, it was great.

"I'm glad they put the bridge in, not just for me but for everyone."

Alan Jr took Dog, his 13-year-old Staffordshire Terrier-Labrador cross, for a much-anticipated walk.

Until the bridge was erected, Dog was forced to go to the toilet on the balcony.

Alan Jr said: "He was like an excited puppy and he didn't want to come back indoors afterward."

Councillor Phil Alford, cabinet member for housing, said: “We're pleased to have been able to erect a temporary walkway to enable residents at Churchill Court to avoid floodwater at the entrance to the property.

“We continue to offer help and support to anyone affected, and the Environment Agency has confirmed that flood waters in the area are now receding, with an overall improvement in ground conditions across Wilton.”

Most of the water has now either dried up or frozen over but a strong smell of sewage remains.
