A MAN punched a hole in the wall of a hotel room he was staying in during an argument with his girlfriend.

James Farmer, of Spracklands in Dinton, was staying with his girlfriend at the Merchants House Hotel in Salisbury as a "birthday treat".

Mr Farmer got "extremely angry" during an argument about whether he had been under the influence of cannabis, according to the prosecution, and punched a hole in the plaster wall.

An argument took place between the pair on Friday, October 28 2022, and the incident happened the next day.

The cost to repair totalled £165 and the hotel claimed the room was not lettable for three days while the wall was fixed, losing customs of £556.11.

At a hearing at Salisbury Magistrates' Court on February 24, Mr Farmer's defence argued: "He's not punching the wall intending to damage it but he's reckless."

It added that "most businesses" would have let the flawed room with a discount rather than turning away bookings.

Mr Farmer was ordered to pay £245 for the offence.

This included a £40 fine for criminal damage, £165 in compensation to Merchants House Hotel, and a further £40 fine for a breach of conditional discharge relating to cannabis possession and breach of a closed order.
