A SALISBURY woman and the dog that she said saved her life completed a remarkable journey as they appeared on the famous green carpet at Crufts.

Sofie Hawkins originally got her Chihuahua cross Harleigh with a miniature pinscher to help her with her mental health.

The 25-year-old first tried dog showing for fun but ended up qualifying for the final of Scruffts, the competition for non-pedigree dogs at Crufts was held from March 9 to 12 at the NEC Birmingham.

She said: “I was involved in a road traffic collision, and following that and the loss of my brother, things got a little bit too much for me and I didn't really want to be here anymore.

“I went through laser therapy and treatment and the psychologist recommended getting a support dog, so I went and viewed a litter that met all the requirements of what was needed.

“Harleigh attached herself to me and wouldn’t leave me alone, so I took her home and she's been by my side ever since.

“She has made a massive difference to my life. If I didn't have her, I wouldn't be here today, so she's 100 per cent helped save my life.”

Hawkins's showpiece was judged by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and despite not taking the top prize, she was proud of the journey she and Harleigh have been on.

She added: “It's been amazing, actually, everyone has been so helpful today, and really supportive and comforting, and they have honestly made us feel very welcome.

“Being out there is obviously very nerve-wracking and I've been a little bit scared today, but it's been really good and having Harleigh by my side has really helped.

“It’s been a fantastic experience, a long journey, but I wouldn’t change it because it’s been amazing.”

Crufts, run by The Kennel Club, is a unique celebration of happy, healthy dogs and of the loving relationship that they enjoy with their owners.
