A three-week-long gas leak has forced a broadband company to re-route its cables to restore services to customers.

The leak has meant temporary traffic lights have been in place on Wilton Road, causing long delays throughout the day.

Energy company Scotia Gas Networks (SGN) has been waiting March 8 for "specialist equipment" to repair one of three gas leaks.

The leak was discovered near Wilton Road when Virgin Media employees were trying to repair a damaged cable.

This left customers without broadband, television or telephone access from Wednesday, March 8, until Tuesday, March 28.

Customer Daniel Gevaux feared losing his remote job because of the outage.

An SGN spokesperson said: "We’ve been working in the area recently on a few separate repairs, and this is the final piece of work required with the specialist equipment.

"To ensure everything remains safe, we’ve been continually monitoring the site which is standard practice for us."

SGN confirmed that it is expecting the equipment to repair the final leak to arrive on Monday, April 3.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “While we have been unable to repair the damaged cable due to concerns over a gas leak, we have now restored services for all customers by feeding the affected cabinets from another area of the network.

"We will be able to repair the damaged cable when we have confirmation that it is safe for our workers to do so.”
