POUNDLAND hopes to open a new store after it applied for permission to develop Smyths.

The value chain already has one store on High Street but it has confirmed to the Journal that it is setting its sights on something bigger.

Poundland applied to Wiltshire Council for planning permission to install two new glazed shopfront windows at Unit 1, Churchill Way West, on March 27.

One week prior to this, on Monday, March 20, Poundland applied to install new illuminated signs on the unit.

This site is currently occupied by Smyths Toys and when staff were approached by the Journal they said there were no plans to close the shop.

The plans are currently under consultation and the Salisbury City Council Planning & Development committee will consider them.

The deadline for a decision on the signs is May 8 and May 20 for the windows.

A Poundland spokesperson said: "While later in the year we hope to open a brand new, large store in Salisbury those plans are still tentative at this stage and subject to agreement.

"When there’s more news to share, we will."

Smyths was approached for further information but the company has not responded.
