THE springtime day of Knights and dragon slaying will soon take place in the city centre when the St Georges Day celebrations begin.

St Georges Day – also known as The Feast of George will take place in the Market Place and Guildhall Square on Sunday, April 23 between 10 am and 4 pm and a full family fun day of entertainment has been planned.

The Town Crier will announce the opening of St George’s Day at 9.55am from the Guildhall steps where Mace Bearers will lead Salisbury City Councillors in a procession.

Salisbury Mayor, Cllr Tom Corbin will provide a welcome.

He said: "St George's Day celebrations in Salisbury are a great experience for all ages including fun activities for families to do from craft workshops, puppet shows, storytelling, Wessex Circus performers, and George versus Dragon Trial to Morris dancing and free blue badge guided tours of the City. 

"Salisbury is known for putting on a great show and I encourage people to come along to enjoy and take part in the festivities."

Merry Go Round Storytelling will take place throughout the day at 10.15 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 1.15pm and 2.45 pm, along with Mr Brown’s Pig Puppet Show at 11.15 am and 2pm.

Morris Dancers will be celebrating St George’s Day in the main arena at 10.45am, 1pm and 3.15pm as they dance in the style of the Cotswold Morris – a style of folk dance which can be traced back to the 13th century.

At 12 pm, the Salisbury St. George Blue Badge free guided tour will begin at the steps of the Guildhall and participants can find out facts about the patron saint.

At 12.30pm and 3.15pm, a family fun court drama will take place between St George and the dragon.

There will also be live music and street food throughout the day.
