THE NEW Amesbury History Centre is one step closer to opening.

On Friday, April 28, the charity that will run the reconstructed centre was given the keys.

A short lease signing ceremony took place at the new building where mayor councillor Damian Kuczera handed the keys to Christina Gane and Normal Parker of the Amesbury History Centre CIO.

Christina expects the building's cafe to be opened "within weeks" with a small display to follow while the trust develops the museum space upstairs.

The building, on Church Street at the site of the former Mellor Hall, was completed last year after a two-year build which has been paid for by Amesbury Town Council using money from local housing developers.

It initially closed its doors to the public on August 13, 2019.

At the ceremony, Cllr Kuczera thanked those who had been involved with the project over its 13-year history.

He said that this "important milestone" was now the start of what will be an exciting journey for the CIO, turning the empty building into a leading tourist destination, which will "benefit the town in so many ways".

Reconstruction of the building has been documented on the Amesbury History YouTube channel.
