AROUND 60 firefighters tackled a blaze at a village pub overnight.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 5.14pm yesterday afternoon (May 10) to the Crown Inn at Alvediston to reports of a thatch fire.

On their arrival, firefighters quickly requested support.

At around 10pm there were 12 fire engines and several specialist vehicles at the incident (approximately 60 firefighters).

Crews striped the thatch, put fire breaks in place and were using breathing apparatus, hose reels and main jets to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters were then on scene overnight dealing with the fire and dampening down.

The fire service has said steady progress has been made overnight but the incident is ongoing with crews still actively firefighting and stripping back the roof.

Five fire engines, a water carrier and aerial ladder platform are still in attendance.
