THE peregrine falcon family at the cathedral has become well-known with Salisbury residents and to mark the next stage of their development, it will soon be time to ring and name the chicks.

Although a time to celebrate, one of the four eggs failed to hatch.

Peregrine expert Granville Pictor took a look at the footage of the moment the unhatched egg was broken when one of the adults stood on it.

It is believed the egg was infertile.

To name the three chicks who are doing well despite the wet weather, a public poll is being launched so that people can choose their favourite names and a list of suggestions has been created by Salisbury Cathedral volunteers.

Volunteer gardeners at the Cathedral suggested Rose due to roses budding in May and also, to honour the Rt Rev Rose Hudson Wilkin, Bishop of Dover who played such a significant role in the crowning of the new Queen.

They also suggested Carl after Carl Linnaeus, an 18th century Swedish botanist. Carl is also a Scandinavian and German version of Charles.

Education volunteers suggested Albert (Prince Albert) as he used his influence for humanitarianism and moderate reform and for speaking out against child labour and slavery.

Abbey was also suggested as a name to mark Westminster Abbey where 39 monarchs have been crowned.

The flower arrangers at the cathedral chose Sceptre as a male name with a symbol sovereign authority and the Tuesday Morning Guiding team suggested the Kingly name of Rex.

Voting closes on Tuesday, May 16 and the full list of names can be reviewed when you register your vote on the cathedral’s poll.
