PECKISH pub-goers are being challenged to enter Ringwood’s inaugural rib eating competition, due to be held at The London Tavern.

Participants will have 15 minutes to munch the meat from as many pork ribs as they can.

The bone-afide winner will be the entrant with the highest amount of clean ribs in front of them at the finish.

Eating at the Hampshire pub begins at 1pm on Sunday, July 2, and spectators will be able to enjoy a special ‘ribs and wings’ menu that will be running all day.

It is being held on the weekend of the Tavern’s music festival which is being sponsored by Thatcher’s Cider and runs from Friday through to Sunday.

Landlord Phil Hoyle said: "Competitive eating goes back centuries and it is a bit of fun and something a bit different.

"To my knowledge, we’ve never had a rib-eating competition in Ringwood before and we hope to make this an annual event.

"It is £20 to enter and those who are placed in the top three will get their money back and the winner will receive a prize, all profits will go to the Ringwood and District Round Table.

"I’ve had a practice myself and I think preparation, technique and courage are the prime ingredients for a top rib eater.

"It promises to be a great day because we have a special menu and also we’ll have live music from the brilliant John James Newman and friends from about 2:30pm.

"I know there are lots of excellent eaters out there and I’d encourage them to enter – even if they are not placed they will have had a good feed.

"Another important thing about rib eating is that it’s best to wash them down with some great beer and cider – which we have plenty of.”
