Four Scouts from the Salisbury area have joined more than 4,000 others from the UK delegation in leaving the official site of the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea for swiftly organised alternative arrangements in Seoul due to extreme heat and other conditions at the official site.

Ryan Woods, 14, of Amesbury, Jade Summer, 14, of Gomeldon, Sophie Kinsey, 14, of Salisbury and Alfie Gilfillian, 16, of Salisbury, celebrated at Heathrow Airport shortly before boarding their flight to South Korea to join approximately 40,000 other Scouts from around the world at the Tuesday, August 1 to Saturday, August 12 event in Gunsan-si.

However, conditions at the World Scout Jamboree made international headlines due to unusually high temperatures and reports of the manners in which the site was being operated.

Matt Hyde, chief executive of Scouts UK, said in a statement on Sunday, August 6 that the decision to remove UK Scouts from the site were taken in response to concerns about the cleanliness of toilet facilities, inadequate amounts of food provided, the “punishingly hot,” “unprecedented heatwave,” and medical services.

Matt added: “We are disappointed in the organisers and the organisation and we do feel let down, but the Jamboree journey continues for us.”
