The A303 has been ranked England’s most popular road in a survey by Transport Focus.

The results for the Strategic Roads User Survey, which received more than 9,000 responses, were announced on Tuesday, September 12.

In it, motorists rated their overall satisfaction with the A303 at 85per cent, three per cent higher than the M5, which took the title of most popular motorway.

Respondents ranked their satisfaction with journey times on the A303 at 81 per cent, surface quality at 75 per cent and feeling of safety at 84 per cent.

The news comes after recent rows regarding renewed plans for the Stonehenge Tunnel, which aims to replace the section of the A303 which bypasses Stonehenge with an underground carriageway.

The road bypassing the ancient monument regularly sees sluggish traffic speeds, partially due to the number of visitors to the stones, which is estimated at around 1.5m people per year.

The M6 was rated the least popular motorway with the lowest level of satisfaction (66 per cent). The A27 receives the lowest level of overall satisfaction (59 per cent), followed by the A12 (61 per cent).

Journeys on smart motorways had lower levels of satisfaction with road users than those that did not include a smart section (smart 69 per cent; not smart 76 per cent).
