PLANS have been submitted to turn a former much-loved discount home goods store in Ringwood into a restaurant.

The family-run Ringwood Surplus Store ceased trading on Christmas Eve (December 24) last year after 55 years of business in Meeting House Lane, with its owner citing the dominance of the online market as the primary reason for the closure.

The planning documents say the development of a restaurant on the site will "positively impact the current mixed urban space as an appealing addition to its existing shops and restaurants".

A heritage statement submitted with the plans adds: "The intention with the proposal is to maintain the history of the buildings aesthetics and uniformity of the area."

Both floors will have their own bar, as well as dining areas for guests.

The documents submitted with the application do not outline what food will be served at the restaurant.

Ringwood Surplus Stores was opened in 1967 by John Chambers and his wife Sue. The business was eventually taken over by their daughter Nicki, who said she was proud to have continued the family business for so many years.
